26th of February has been marked as the 56th death anniversary of Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, also known as Veer Savarkar, a renowned revolutionary and independence fighter.

Vinayak Damodar Savarkar was born on May 28, 1883, in the Maharashtrian village of Bhagur in the Nashik district. On February 26, 1966, he passed away in Bombay.

Key Points -

Savarkar believed his life’s work was complete in 1964 when India attained independence and it was time to depart. On February 1, 1966, he stated his intention to achieve samadhi and began a hunger strike. On February 26, 1966, he died.

Savarkar was referred to as the “remarkable son of India” by the late former prime minister Indira Gandhi. Her government also released a postage stamp in Savarkar’s honour in 1970.

In 2002, the airport in Port Blair, the capital of Andaman and Nicobar, was renamed “Veer Savarkar International Airport.”

Australia have won the Women’s T20 World Cup for the sixth time by beating South Africa by 19 runs in the final at Newlands.

Opening batter Beth Mooney anchored the Australian innings, scoring an unbeaten 74 in a total of 156 for six.

Victory for the Aussies is their sixth in Women’s T20 World Cup history and completes a hat-trick of tournament wins under captain Meg Lanning after their triumphs in 2018 and 2020.

The World NGO Day is an annual international observance on February 27 to recognize the contributions of non-governmental organizations (NGOs).

The day was first celebrated in 2010 and has since become an annual event that highlights the work of NGOs around the world.

It provides an opportunity to advocate for policies that support their efforts.

World NGO Day aims to create awareness about the sector and encourage people across the world who work in the sector for a good cause.

History of World NGO Day 2023 -

The Baltic Sea NGO Forum of the Council of the Baltic Sea State officially recognised this day on April 27, 2010.

The event was accepted by the forum in 2012.

In 2014, February 27 was declared as World NGO Day and it became a historic day for the NGO community across the globe.

An international calendar day, which is now known as "World NGO Day", was inaugurated for the first time on this day.

The Baltic Sea NGO Forum have member countries like Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Russia, Norway and Sweden. Overall, World NGO Day is observed in around 89 countries and 6 continents.

The Kerala government and UN Women entered into an agreement, in order to promote activities that are welcoming to women in the State’s tourist industry.

Kerala Tourism and UN Women India committed to promoting gender-inclusive tourist destinations throughout the State through the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU).

The Responsible Tourism Mission will carry out the terms of the Memorandum of Understanding, which was signed by Susan Ferguson, a representative of UN Women India, and P B Nooh, director of Kerala tourism.

The four-day summit was officially opened by Kerala’s Minister of Tourism, P A Mohamed Riyas, who stated that the MoU was a continuation of the State government’s increased efforts towards women-friendly tourism since October last year.

There are 280 delegates and 70 speakers in the conclave.

Computer scientist Hari Balakrishnan has been awarded the 2023 Marconi Prize.

Dr Balakrishnan has been cited "for fundamental contributions to wired and wireless networking, mobile sensing and distributed systems".

The Marconi Prize is a top honour for computer scientists and is awarded by the US-based Marconi Foundation.

It is given to those "who have made a significant contribution to increasing digital inclusivity through advanced information and communications technology".

Key Points -

Hari Balakrishnan is the Fujitsu Professor of Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

He is also the Founder, Chief Technology Officer, and Chairman of Cambridge Mobile Telematics (CMT).

Dr Balakrishnan has previously won the Infosys Prize (2020) and the IEEE Koji Kobayashi Computers and Communications Award (2021).

Previous winners of the Marconi Prize include Sir Tim Berners-Lee, Google cofounder Sergey Brin, and sci-fi author Arthur C. Clarke.

Daniil Medvedev won the Qatar Open in his professional tennis debut by defeating Andy Murray 6-4, 6-4, in the final game.

In every set, Medvedev converted quick beginnings. In the first, he got to 4-1, and in the second, he got to 3-1.

India has ranked 42nd among 55 leading global economies on the International IP Index released by the US Chambers of Commerce.

The United States ranks first in the 2023 index, followed by the UK and France.

According to the report, India’s size and economic influence is growing on the world stage.

India has taken steps to improve enforcement against copyright-infringement and provides a best-in-class framework to promote better understanding and use of IP assets.

The Karnataka Government will build the country’s first Marina or a boat basin offering dockage, at Byndoor in Udupi district to promote coastal tourism in Karnataka.

The government will also seek permission from the Centre for the relaxation of coastal regulation zone (CRZ) to take up beach tourism in coastal areas and pilgrim tourism.

The government will collect the history of the greatest dynasties such as Ganga, Kadamba, Rashtrakoota, Chalukya and Hoysala from the Department of Archaeology and develop the history of tourism in the state.

This will not only help the development of tourism but also help people understand the rich history of the state.

Lt Gen RS Reen took over as Director General Quality Assurance. A 1986-batch officer, Lt Gen Reen is an alumnus of Indian Military Academy, Dehradun.

He had completed his BE (Electrical) from National Institute of Technology, Srinagar, Specialisation in Radio Engineering and post-graduation in Communication Engineering from MC EME, Secunderabad.

He was a senior faculty at Defence Institute of Quality Assurance, Bengaluru.

He has headed Senior Quality Assurance Estt, Brig at Headquarters, Directorate General of Quality Assurance (DGQA) and was Controller (Missile System) in Secunderabad.

Reen also headed the DQA(L) as Additional Director General (Electronics) at HQ DGQA, New Delhi.

Director General Quality Assurance -

The DGQA is an inter-service organisation functioning under the Department of Defence Production in the Ministry of Defence.

It is responsible for second party quality assurance of all defence stores and equipment, both imported as well as indigenous, for the Indian Army, Indian Navy (excluding Naval Armaments) and common user items for the Indian Air Force procured from private sector and public sector undertakings.

Indian Air Force (IAF) will participate in the multilateral air exercise ’Exercise Cobra Warrior’ at the Royal Air Force’s (RAF) in the United Kingdom from March 6 to 24, 2023.

The Exercise Cobra Warrior is a multilateral Air exercise in which Air Forces from Finland, Sweden, South Africa, the United States of America and Singapore would also be participating alongside the RAF and IAF.

The aim of the exercise is to participate in various fighter aircraft engagements and learn from the best practices of various Air Forces.

The other exercise held between both countries include: Ajeya Warrior (Military), Konkan (Navy), Indradhanush (Air Force) and Konkan Shakti (First ever tri-services joint exercise)
