Govt revises wages under MGNREGA, Haryana gets highest rates
The Centre has notified revised wage rates under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) for FY24.
After the hike, Haryana will have the highest daily wage at ₹357/day and Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh the lowest at ₹221.
The notification was issued under Section 6 (1) of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA), 2005, that says the Centre may, by notification, specify the wage rate for its beneficiaries.
The state-wise wage rate revisions are as follows:
At ₹255/day, Rajasthan will get the highest percentage increase in wages.
The wage hikes, which range from Rs 7 to Rs 26, will come into effect from April 1.
Bihar and Jharkhand have registered a percentage increase of around eight from last year. Last year, the daily wage for a MNREGA worker in these two states was Rs 210. It has now been revised to Rs 228.
For Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh, which have the lowest daily wages at Rs 221, the percentage increase from last year was recorded at 17. In 2022-23, the two states had a daily wage of Rs 204.
The increases in the wages for states range between two and 10 per cent. Karnataka, Goa, Meghalaya and Manipur are among the states to register the lowest percentage increase.
WHAT IS MNREGA SCHEME?
The Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA), which was initially called National Rural Employment Guarantee Act 2005, is an Indian labour law and social security measure which aims to guarantee the “right to work”.
The scheme is a flagship programme that aims to improve the livelihood security of rural households by offering at least 100 days of guaranteed wage employment in a financial year to every home with adult members who volunteer for unskilled manual labour.

Assam govt signs MoU with Flybig for intra-state flight services
Assam government signed an MoU with Flybig to promote intra-state air connectivity.
Flybig will operate flights between Guwahati-Dibrugarh-Guwahati and Guwahati-Silchar-Guwahati routes on a daily basis.
The flight operations will be in line with the Centre’s UDAN scheme with the state government operating the flights under viability gap funding.
The services will give assured connectivity and price as it has been decided to keep a tab on the pricing with the maximum price fixed at Rs 4000.

India win 4 gold medals at Women’s World Boxing Championships for 2nd time
India’s 25-year-old boxer Lovlina Borgohain defeated Australia’s Caitlin Parker (75kg category) to bag her first-ever gold medal at the Women’s World Boxing Championships. She also took India’s tally of gold medals at Women’s World Boxing Championships 2023 to four.
This is the second time in history that India have won four gold medals at the Women’s World Boxing Championships other occasion being in 2006 when Mary Kom, Sarita Devi, Jenny Lalremliani and Lekha K.C had won gold for the country.
India’s 26-year-old boxer Nikhat Zareen defeated Nguyễn Thị Tâm of Vietnam to win gold medal in the 48-50kg category.
It is Nikhat’s second gold medal in Women’s World Boxing Championships. She became the second Indian female boxer after Mary Kom to win multiple gold medals at World Championships.
Saweety Boora defeated her rival Lina Wang of China in the 81-kilogram category to win the World championship.

West Indies’ 34-year-old batter Johnson Charles smashed the fastest hundred by a West Indies cricketer in T20I cricket history.
Charles reached the three-figure mark off 39 deliveries in the second T20I against South Africa.
The previous fastest T20I hundred by a West Indies batter was hit by Chris Gayle off 47 deliveries against England in 2016.
The record stayed with the Universe Boss for seven years before Charles made it his own.
Johnson Charles’ 39-ball century the fastest in men’s T20s by a West Indies player and joint fourth-fastest by anyone in men’s T20 history.
He also notched the joint second-fastest hundred in T20Is, equalling Romania’s Sivakumar Periyalwar (against Turkey in 2019) and Hungary’s Zeeshan Kukikhel (against Austria in 2022).

Asian Development Bank to provide Rs 754 cr loan to SAEL Industries
Asian Development Bank (ADB) will provide a loan up to Rs 754 crore to SAEL Industries Ltd for setting up of biomass power plants in Rajasthan.
SAEL is a solar and agricultural waste-to-energy company. It has developed a business model where crop residues are used as fuel in waste-to-energy projects.
The company aims to grow its portfolio to 3.5 GW over the next four years by adding 100 MW of new biomass and 600 MW of new solar capacity annually.
ADB’s support will fund the construction of five biomass power plants in the districts of Bikaner, Churu, Hanumangarh, Jhunjhunu, and Sikar in the state of Rajasthan.

Pilibhit Tiger Reserve among six tiger reserves in India to get CAITS Approval
The international executive committee (IEC) approved six tiger reserves in India including the Pilibhit Tiger Reserve (PTR) for CAITS (conservation assured tiger standards), for fulfilling minimum standards for tiger conservation and effective management of reserves.
The other five tiger reserves awarded with this global approval include the Kali tiger reserve in Karnataka, Periyar tiger reserve in Kerala, Melghat, Tadoba-Andhari, and Nawegaon-Nagzira tiger reserves of Maharashtra.
PTR is the second reserve in UP to be awarded the approval.
The first is Dudhwa tiger reserve which secured its place among 14 tiger reserves of the country, out of a total of 54, which had been crowned with this global approval on July 29, global tiger day.

Israel-UAE free trade deal takes effect
A free trade agreement between Israel and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) came into effect recently, the first such economic deal Israel reached with an Arab country.
According to the statement, the free trade deal is expected to reduce customs duties and lower the cost of living while increasing business between the two countries. Additionally, Israeli companies will gain access to UAE government tenders.
The taking effect of the free trade agreement is important news for the Israeli economy, for the strengthening of ties with the UAE and is further testament to the importance of the Abraham Accords.
The Abraham Accords are a series of U.S.-brokered deals Israel reached with the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Morocco in 2020 to establish diplomatic relations.
According to the Israeli Foreign Ministry, the UAE is Israel’s 16th largest trading partner, with bilateral trade volume reaching over 2.5 billion U.S. dollars in 2022.
