India, UK hold joint maritime exercise ‘Konkan’ in Arabian Sea
The annual bilateral maritime exercise ‘Konkan’ between the Indian Navy and UK’s Royal Navy held off the Konkan coast in the Arabian Sea from March 20-22.
The joint exercise by both the navies demonstrated operational readiness, enhanced interoperability and improved capability to conduct joint operations.
INS Trishul, a Guided Missile Frigate, and HMS Lancaster, a Type 23 Guided Missile Frigate, participated in ‘Konkan 2023’ and conducted several maritime exercises to enhance interoperability and imbibe best practices.
The exercise covered all domains of maritime operations, air, surface and subsurface.
India and the UK agreed on new cooperation on maritime domain awareness, including new agreements on maritime information sharing.
The UK has been invited to join India’s Information Fusion Center in Gurugram.
‘Konkan’ exercise
It is a bilateral naval exercise conducted between India and the United Kingdom.
The Konkan series of exercises was started in 2004.
Since then, the exercise is conducted by both the navies in rotation.
The exercise provided excellent training to the personnel of both the navies.

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan launched the state’s youth policy and portal at Youth Mahapanchayat in Bhopal.
Describing a new vocational training scheme under the policy, the Mukhya Mantri Yuva Kaushal Kamai Yojana, which he claimed to be the world’s biggest apprenticeship scheme, the CM said the scheme will train those who do not find jobs after completing higher secondary or graduation.
Those registering for the scheme will also receive Rs 8,000 per month as stipend for the duration of the course, which will extend to a maximum of one year.
Registrations is due to start on the youth portal, yuvaportal.mp.gov.in, from 1 June and registered youth — those between the age of 15 and 29 years — will start getting money from 1 July.
He added that five per cent reservation will be given in state medical colleges to state government school students clearing NEET.
The Madhya Pradesh CM also announced that the Youth Commission will be reconstituted with new provisions in the state by 5 April, and a youth budget — where money will be allocated to all these initiatives announced — will also be included in next year’s budget.

National Institute of Urban Affairs is organising first Urban Climate Film Festival under U20 engagement events
The Urban Climate Film Festival was launched on 24 March at the ML Bhartia Auditorium in New Delhi.
The festival is being organized with the support of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, Government of India, the French Development Agency (AFD) and the European Union.
A curated selection of 11 films from 9 countries will be screened to create wider awareness of the impact of climate change on life in cities and engage the public in the dialogue on sustainable urban development.
Selected films will be screened at the festival in New Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Kolkata and Ahmedabad.
The event, to be held from 25 to 26 March 2023, includes 11 award-winning films and interactive sessions from countries such as India, France, Germany, Belgium, Poland and USA.

The Defence Ministry signed two contracts with Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), at a total cost of over ₹3,700 crore for ‘Arudhra’ Medium Power Radars (MPR) and Radar Warning Receivers for the Indian Air Force (IAF).
The ₹2,800-crore contract for Arudhra radars has been indigenously designed and developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and will be manufactured by Bharat Electronics Limited.
It is a 4D multi-function phased array radar with electronic steering in both azimuth and elevation for surveillance, detection and tracking of aerial targets.
The system would have target identification based on interrogations from co-located Identification Friend or Foe system.
The second contract relates to 129 DR-118 Radar Warning Receivers at a cost of ₹950 crore.
The DR-118 Radar Warning Receiver will considerably enhance the Electronic Warfare capabilities of Su-30 MKI aircraft.

Tamil Nadu Assembly re-adopts Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Online Gambling and Regulation of Online Games Bill
The Tamil Nadu assembly passed the bill to ban online gambling for the second time in six months after governor RN Ravi returned it.
The bill, titled Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Online Gambling and Regulation of Online Games Bill, 2022, was introduced in the assembly by chief minister MK Stalin.
The assembly first passed the bill on October 19, 2022.
The governor did not sign off on it for months and eventually on March 6, 2023, returned the bill, amid an ongoing tussle between the government and the Raj Bhavan.
Following discussion, the bill was passed by voice vote and Speaker M Appavu declared it was adopted unanimously.
The opposition AIADMK staged a walkout despite supporting the bill.

India clinches both men’s and women’s titles of Asian Kho Kho Championship
Indian men’s and women’s teams clinched the titles in the 4th Asian Kho Kho Championships that concluded at Tamulpur in Baksa district of Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) in Assam.
In the finals, Indian men defeated Nepal by 6 points and an inning while Indian women got the better of the same opponent by 33 points and an inning.
Earlier, in the semifinals, Indian men overcame Sri Lankan challenge by 45 points. On the other hand, Nepal defeated Bangladesh by 12 points with 1.5 minutes to spare.
In the women’s category semifinals, India beat Bangladesh by 49 points and an inning.
And in the second semifinal, Nepal didn’t face much difficulty to defeat Sri Lanka by 59 points and an inning.
In men’s and women’s categories, the third place was shared by Sri Lanka and Bangladesh respectively.
Altogether 16 teams (both male and female) participated in this event. The participating countries were – Bangladesh, Bhutan, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, Nepal, Singapore, South Korea, Sri Lanka and the host India.
The event was organised by the Kho Kho Federation of India (KKFI) and was hosted by the Assam Kho Kho Association (AKKA) with support from the BTR Government.

The launch comes ahead of the marquee Indian Premier League (IPL) tournament that is set to begin next week.
Notably, the cricket app has been launched to take on rivals like Dream11, Mobile Premier League (MPL), and Games24x7’s My11Circle.

FSIB recommends Siddhartha Mohanty as chairperson of Life Insurance Corporation (LIC)
Headhunting agency – Financial Services Institutions Bureau (FSIB) – on Thursday recommended Siddhartha Mohanty for the position of chairperson of India’s largest insurer Life Insurance Corporation (LIC).
Mohanty is already serving as the interim chairperson of the insurance behemoth for a period of three months, along with discharging his responsibilities as managing director (MD) of the corporation.
While his name has been recommended by this autonomous body, which was set up for the purpose of recommending persons for appointment as whole-time directors and non-executive chairpersons on the boards of financial services institutions, the final decision on the FSIB recommendation would be taken by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Apart from Mohanty, who is the interim chairperson and the MD, Mini Ipe, M Jagannath, and Tablesh Pandey are holding the position of MD at the corporation. Generally, LIC has one chairperson and four MDs.

Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment (MoSJE) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Sant Nirankari Mandal, Burari Road, Delhi for spreading the message of Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan (NMBA) among youth, women and students etc.
This MoU will boost the implementation of NMBA to achieve drug sensitized India.

To curb the menace of drug demand, the MoSJE has been implementing National Action Plan for Drug Demand Reduction(NAPDDR) which is an umbrella scheme under which financial assistance is provided to State Governments/ Union Territory (UT) Administrations for Preventive Education and Awareness Generation, Capacity Building, Skill development, vocational training and livelihood support of ex-drug addicts, among other programs.
