7th edition of Asia Economic Dialogue to be held in Pune


The seventh edition of the Asia Economic Dialogue will be held from Feb 23 till the 25th of February in Pune.

It is the External Affairs Ministry’s annual flagship event on Geo-economics, co-hosted in collaboration with Pune International Centre.

The principal theme for the Dialogue is ‘Asia and the Emerging World Order’.

The Dialogue will also discuss themes such as Global Growth Prospects, How the Global South Will Shape the G20 Agenda and the Metaverse.

The Inaugural Session of the Dialogue would be a conversation between External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar, Bhutan Finance Minister Lyonpo Namgay Tshering and Maldives Finance Minister Ibrahim Ameer.

More than 44 speakers from various countries including Brazil, the US, the UK, South Africa, Bhutan, Maldives, Switzerland, Singapore and Mexico will be participating in this Dialogue.

Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar wins gold medal at ISSF World Cup


In Shooting, India’s Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar claimed the gold medal in the men’s individual 50m rifle 3 positions competition at the ISSF World Cup in Cairo.

The 22-year-old Tomar, who had also won a gold in the Chagwon World Cup last year, won 16-6 in the gold medal contest to comfortably beat Austria’s Alexander Schmirl.

Earlier, India’s Tilottama Sen had won a bronze medal in the women’s 10m Air Rifle.

India is placed comfortably on top of the medal tally with four gold.

Hungary is in second position with two gold medals.

Uber joins hands with Tata Motors for 25000 EVs


Uber signed an MoU with Tata Motors, India’s leading carmaker, to bring 25,000 electric vehicles onto the platform.

The agreement between Uber and Tata Motors is the largest EV commitment yet between an automaker and a ridesharing platform in India.

Tata Motors will begin deliveries of XPRES-T EVs to Uber fleet partners in a phased manner starting this month.

The partnership will aid the electrification of Uber services across Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, and Ahmedabad.

India’s first hybrid rocket launched from Tamil Nadu’s Pattipulam


India’s first hybrid sounding rocket by private players was successfully launched from Pattipulam village in the Chengalpattu district of Tamil Nadu.

Martin Foundation, in association with Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam International Foundation and Space Zone India, launched the Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Satellite Launch Vehicle Mission- 2023.

The organisations mentioned that 5,000 students were involved in the project.

The selected students designed and constructed a student satellite launch vehicle (rocket) and 150 PICO satellite research experiment cubes that contained different payloads.

The reusable rocket was made by the selected top 100 students, while the rest made the satellites.

The rocket can be used for research in weather, atmospheric conditions and radiation.

Sounding rockets are one or two stage solid propellant rockets used for probing the upper atmospheric regions and for space research.

They also serve as easily affordable platforms to test or prove prototypes of new components or subsystems intended for use in launch vehicles and satellites.

A hybrid-propellant rocket is a rocket with a rocket motor that uses rocket propellants in two different phases: one solid and the other either gas or liquid.

University of Auckland, Tata Memorial Hospital collaborate for cancer care


Waipapa Taumata Rau, University of Auckland, New Zealand, and Tata Memorial Hospital (TMH), Mumbai, the largest and the most renowned cancer care hospital and research centre in India, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to engage in long-term cooperation in cancer care.

The MoU aims to explore ways to enhance cancer care using digital health. The two countries have a long history of cooperation in healthcare and this partnership builds on an already strong relationship.

The University of Auckland is strongly committed to finding solutions to some of the most pressing global health issues in partnership with leading institutions.



Initial projects envisaged for the partnership include a digital platform for clinical trials to track study-related activities for patients, investigators and regulators; a digital platform to make outpatient clinics more efficient; and a digital method to enhance prescription medicine safety, such as including connecting systems to ensure potential serious drug interactions are identified and flagged for the treating physician.

Noted classical dancer & Padma Shri awardee Kanak Rele passes away at 85


Renowned Mohiniyattam artiste Kanak Rele, who won the Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri awards, passed away aged 85.

Rele had a career spanning 60 years and was the founder-principal of the Nalanda Nritya Kala Mahavidyalaya.

She created the Nalanda Dance Research Centre in 1966, and the Nalanda Nritya Kala Mahavidyalay in 1972.

Kanak Rele was born in Gujarat on June 11, 1937.

In her nearly eight-decade-long dancing career, Dr Rele was awarded:

  1. Padma Shri (1989),
  2. Padma Bhushan (2013),
  3. Sangeet Natak Akademi Award (1994),
  4. Kalidas Samman (2006) and
  5. MS Subbulakshmi Award, amongst other accolades.

Vignesh NR becomes 80th Grandmaster in India


After winning the 24th NordWest Cup 2023 at Bad Zwischenahn in Germany and defeating German IM Ilja Schneider, Indian chess player Vignesh NR became the 80th Grandmaster of India.

The Chennai boy reached the milestone after crossing 2500 in the live ratings.

Vignesh’s elder brother Visakh NR had become India’s 59th GM in 2019.

Thus, Visakh and Vignesh become India’s first brothers who are Grandmasters.

Vignesh earned his first GM-norm at Qatar Masters in 2015 at the age of 17 years.

A little over one and a half years later, he scored his second GM-norm at 24th Abu Dhabi Masters in 2017.

He secured his final GM-norm at 1st Gujarat GM Open 2018.

A fourth GM-norm was scored at Asian Continental 2019 at Xingtai, China.

Navy inks MoU with Seychelles on maritime awareness


India and Seychelles signed six agreements in key areas, including maritime security, and on sharing of white shipping information that would enable the two countries to exchange data regarding identity and movement of non-military commercial vessels.

According to the MoU, the countries will work together and improve maritime safety in the Indian Ocean Region.

The safety provisions will be based on the SAGAR initiative – Security and Growth for All in the Region.

With this, they will be able to correlate better and can share information in a more compressed way.

This architecture is implemented by Indian Ocean Commission.

The IOC is supported by Regional Maritime Information Fusion Centre, RCOC, and other countries like Djibouti, Comoros, Kenya, Mauritius, France, Seychelles, and Madagascar.

India has no maritime agreements related to this part of the Indian Ocean with these countries except Seychelles.

Even if it does, those agreements do not talk about sharing information! Thus, it is essential to sign the MoU with the country.

The Indian Ocean Commission (IOC) is an intergovernmental body created in 1984 to protect the interests of the Western Indian Ocean islands.

It consists of Madagascar, Comoros, La Réunion (French overseas territory), Mauritius and Seychelles.

The Commission has five observers — India, China, European Union (EU), Malta and International Organisation of La Francophonie (OIF).

India is only an observer at the Indian Ocean Commission; not a full member.

Former Income Tax Chief Commissioner TCA Ramanujam passes away


TCA Ramanujam, a retired chief commissioner of income taxes, lawyer, expert in Sanskrit, and BusinessLine columnist, passed away. He was 88.

As Chief Commissioner of Income Tax until his retirement in 1992, Mr. Ramanujam also spent a year as a member of the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal.

In 2002, he began his advocacy career again and served as a senior standing counsel for the Income Tax division.

He graduated from Madras Law College with a law degree and an M.A. in Economics from Vivekananda College.

In 1992, he started writing a tax column for The Indian Express, and in 1995, he did the same for BusinessLine.

Along with his daughter Ms. Sangeetha, an attorney at the Madras High Court,he founded the journal part of the Income Tax Reporter as an erudite tax jurist.
