Neil Mohan appointed as new CEO of YouTube


Indian-American executive Neil Mohan has been appointed as the new CEO of YouTube.

He is working as YouTube’s Chief Product Officer and Senior Vice President.

He will replace Susan Wojcicki, who has announced her decision to step down after nine years in the position.

Mohan is joining an elite list of Indian-origin tech chiefs, including Alphabet’s Sundar Pichai, Microsoft’s Satya Nadella, IBM’s Arvind Krishna and Adobe’s Shantanu Narayen.

He worked at DoubleClick Inc. from 1997 to 2003. Worked in At Microsoft, he served as Manager, Corporate Strategist from June 2004 to September 2004.

He returned to DoubleClick as Senior Vice President, Strategy and Product Management. He joined Google in 2008.

From 2008 to 2015, Mohan was in charge of Google’s display and video advertising business.

Mohan became the Chief Product Officer of YouTube in 2015.

Spain Parliament passes a new law allowing gender self-determination


Spain’s government approved a law providing paid medical leave for women suffering from severe menstrual pain, a first in any European country.

Such facilities are currently available in Japan, Indonesia and Zambia.

According to the law, as much leave is needed for any female employee in case of illness, as much leave is required to deal with the pain during periods, no matter what field it is related to.

According to the rules like paid leave found in other health related problems, approval should be given to get treatment from the doctor even during the period.

However, the new law does not specify the number of days leave should be given by doctors during periods.


Other countries providing menstrual leave:

Indonesia passed a law in 2003 that gives women the right to two days of paid menstrual leave per month without prior notice.

In Japan, a 1947 law states that companies must agree to provide women with menstrual leave if they request for it.

In South Korea, women are entitled to one day of unpaid menstrual leave per month. Employers who refuse face fines.

In Taiwan, the Gender Equality in Employment Act entitles women to three days of menstrual leave per year.

Zambia passed a law in 2015 allowing women to take a day off without notice during menstruation.

The 4th edition of joint military exercise, ‘EX DHARMA GUARDIAN’, between India and Japan begins


India-Japan joint training exercise “Dharma Guardian” will be conducted at Camp Imazu in the Shiga province of Japan from 17 February – 2 March.

It is the 4th edition of the joint military exercise “Dharma Guardian” between India and Japan.

Exercise “Dharma Guardian“ will further enhance the level of defence cooperation between the Indian Army and Japanese ground self defence forces, furthering the bilateral ties between the two nations.

The scope of this exercise covers platoon level joint training on operations in jungle and semi urban/urban terrain.

Troops of the Garhwal Rifles Regiment of the Indian Army and an Infantry Regiment from the Middle Army of the Japan Ground Self Defence Force (JGSDF) are participating in the exercise this year to share experiences gained during operations in order to enhance inter-operability in planning & execution.

The joint exercise will enable the two armies to share best practices in tactics, techniques and procedures of conducting tactical operations under a UN Mandate, in addition to developing inter-operability, bonhomie, camaraderie and friendship between the two armies.

The training will focus primarily on high degree of physical fitness and sharing of drills at the tactical level.

During the exercise, participants will engage in a variety of missions ranging from joint planning, joint tactical drills, basics of establishing integrated surveillance grids, including employment of aerial assets.

The joint exercise will facilitate both armies to know each other better, share their wide experiences and enhance their situational awareness.

National level Hackathon ‘KAVACH-2023’ launched to advance India’s cyber-preparedness


Advancing India’s cyber-preparedness, KAVACH-2023, a national-level hackathon was launched to identify innovative ideas and technological solutions for addressing the cyber security and cybercrime challenges of the 21st century.

All India Council for Technical Education and the Bureau of Police Research and Development jointly launched the national-level Hackathon.

While addressing the media, TG Sitharam, Chairman, of All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), said that KAVACH-2023 is a unique kind of national hackathon to identify innovative ideas and technological solutions for addressing the cyber security and cybercrime challenges of the 21st century faced by our law enforcement agencies and common citizens.

The Director General of, the Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPR&D), said that it will be a 36-hour long event, during which youth from educational institutions across the country and registered start-ups will participate to find robust, secure, and effective technological solutions for cyber security by using their technical expertise and innovative skills.

It will advance the blockage of cyber security crimes with robust system monitoring and safety provisions.

India and Fiji sign MoU on visa exemption for holders of diplomatic and official passports


India and Fiji signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on visa exemption for holders of diplomatic and official passports.

As a result of the visa exemption, diplomatic and official passport holders in India and Fiji will now be able to enter, transit through, stay and leave each other’s territories without a visa for a period not exceeding 90 days.

The exemption will allow both countries easier access to opportunities for collaboration, discussions and meetings at all levels.

The external affairs minister is on an official visit to Fiji from February 15-17 to attend the 12th World Hindi Conference in Nadi.

The Union Minister for Culture, Tourism and DoNER, Shri G. Kishan Reddy presented the Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar  (UBKYP) 2019, 2020 and 2021, at Meghdoot Theatre Complex, Rabindra Bhavan, New Delhi

Chairperson of Sangeet Natak Akademi, Dr. Sandhya Purecha presided over the event.

The award is presented by Sangeet Natak Akademi to artists in the field of dance, music, and drama.

It is presented annually to artists below the age of 40. Every year, more than 33 artists are presented with the award.

The winners receive 25,000 rupees of the cash price.

The Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar is being presented since 2006.

The awards were presented by the Union Minister of Culture and Tourism.

19 artists from North East India won the award. The awards were presented for the years 2019, 2020, and 2021. 102 awardees were selected. The lists were finalised in 2022. However, are being presented now. Categories include Sitar, Flute, Mridangam, etc.

He was a famous Shehnai musician. He was one of the few musicians in the country to receive Bharat Ratna. Before him, musicians M S Subbalakshmi and Ravi Shankar were honoured with the award before him and he was the third to receive the honour.

BCCI chief selector Chetan Sharma resigns


Former India pace bowler Chetan Sharma has resigned from the post of chairman of the senior selection committee following a sting operation by a news channel.

During the sting operation, conducted by Zee News, Chetan had alleged that a lot of players took injections to expedite their return to competitive cricket despite being only 80-85 per cent fit.

Former India opener Shiv Sunder Das could be appointed interim chairman as he has played 23 Tests, the most number among the current lot in the selection panel.

Chetan and the entire selection committee had earlier been sacked following India’s semi-final exit from the T20 World Cup in Australia.

He re-applied for the post and was re-appointed as chairman.

Chetan, a handy pace bowler, who played when Kapil Dev was at the helm of Indian cricket, is the country’s first hat-trick man in ODI World Cup.

But Chetan is best remembered for being hit for a last-ball six by Pakistan’s Javed Miandad during the 1986 Asia Cup final in Sharjah.

Govt, e-commerce platform join hands for marketing of SHGs’ products


The Rural Development Ministry has partnered with e-commerce platform Meesho for marketing of products made by the Self Help Groups (SHGs).

The target of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to have 10 crore SHG members by 2024 will be achieved as the Ministry is working on a pro-active mode to enroll new women Sakhis (members).

Giriraj Singh said, in May 2014, when PM Modi took charge, there were 2.35 crore SHG members, but with a focused approach to empower rural poor women in the last 9 years, the number of SHG members has swelled to more than 9 crore and will touch 10 crore members by 2024.

As part of the efforts to connect producers to markets, NRLM and SRLMs have taken steps to promote curated products from SHGs and SHG member entrepreneurs through multiple channels such as Saras Gallery, state specific retail outlets, e-commerce platforms like GeM, Flipkart, Amazon.

Centre launches ‘mPassport Police App’ to fast track passport process


The Ministry of External Affairs has launched the ‘mPassport Police App’ a new digital service that will not just streamline the passport verification process but will also clear all the glitches in this regard for timely updation and issuance of the passports.

While launching the new services, Union home minister Amit Shah said that now anyone in Delhi who applies for a passport will not need to wait for 15 days for police verification.

The new digital services were launched during the 76th Raising Day Parade of Delhi Police.

According to Shah, the facility of passport verification through mobile tablets had also started.

According to Ministry of External Affairs Regional Passport Office (RPO), Union minister Shah also dedicated 350 mobile Tablets to personnel of Delhi Police Special Branch.

These devices will now enable the entire process of police verification and submission reports to become paperless.

Launched the Passport Mobile Application for quick verification of passports.

Having digital verification will save time as well as bring transparency to police investigations.
