TCS CEO and MD Rajesh Gopinathan resigns

 

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) Managing Director (MD) and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Rajesh Gopinathan decided to step down to pursue other interests.

He has been with the company for over 22 years. The board of directors considered his request to be relieved of his positions, and accepted it. It has nominated K Krithivasan CEO-designate with effect from March 16, 2023.

Prior to becoming the CEO and MD of the IT major in 2017, Gopinathan had served as the firm’s chief financial officer (CFO) since 2013.

Gopinathan will continue with the company till September 15, 2023, to provide transition and support to his successor.

Krithivasan, who had joined TCS in 1989, is presently President and Global Head of the Banking, Financial Services, and Insurance (BFSI) Business Group at the company.

He holds a Master’s Degree in Industrial and Management Engineering from IIT Kanpur.

Aleem Dar steps down from ICC’s Elite Panel of Umpires after 19 years

 

Pakistan’s Aleem Dar, a distinguished international cricket umpire who has officiated 435 men’s international matches, has stepped down from the ICC’s Elite Panel of Umpires.

Dar can still work matches played at home in Pakistan any time the PCB picks him to do so.

Dar has officiated in 144 Tests and 222 ODIs as well as 69 T20Is. He also stood in the finals of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2007 and 2011 as well as the finals of ICC T20 WC 2010 and 2012.

He was the first Pakistani umpire to be part of the ICC Elite Panel of Umpires and won the David Shepherd Trophy three years in a row – 2009, 2010 and 2011

In total, he stood in five ICC CWC tournaments and seven ICC T20 WC tournaments.

 

Two new umpires:

The ICC welcomed two new umpires onto their Elite Panel, taking its number from 11 to 12. Adrian Holdstock (South Africa) and Ahsan Raza (Pakistan), who happens to be the only person to stand in more men’s T20Is than Dar’s 69, join a list that includes Chris Gaffaney (New Zealand), Kumar Dharmasena (Sri Lanka), Marais Erasmus (South Africa), Michael Gough (England), Nitin Menon (India), Paul Reiffel (Australia), Richard Illingworth (England), Richard Kettleborough (England), Rodney Tucker (Australia), Joel Wilson (West Indies).

Holdstock has officiated in five Tests, 42 ODIs and 48 T20Is while Ahsan has stood in seven Tests, 41 ODIs and 72 T20Is. Both umpires were part of the panels for the men’s T20 World Cups in 2021 and 2022.

Dane van Niekerk retires from int’l cricket aged 29

 

Former South Africa captain Dane van Niekerk has retired from international cricket.

She played 194 times for South Africa across three formats and was the first bowler to take 100 ODI wickets for the women’s team.

Captain of South Africa in all formats since 2016, Van Niekerk last played international cricket in September 2021.

Van Niekerk, the only female South Africa player to score 1,500 runs and take 50 wickets in women’s T20s.

The 29-year-old played a solitary Test, 107 ODIs and 86 T20Is.

Van Niekerk played for Oval Invincibles in The Hundred and is currently involved in the Women’s Indian Premier League (WPL) with Royal Challengers Bangalore.

Ayush Ministry, MoRD signs MoU for skilling rural youth and empowering women

 

Ministry of Ayush and the Ministry of Rural Development signed a Memorandum of Understanding to collaborate in developing skilled personnel by imparting training to rural poor youth and women’s for the Ayush healthcare system under Deen Dayal Upadhyaya-Grameen Kaushalya Yojana (DDU-GKY).

Apart from this a course for training rural youth as panchakarma technicians/assistants will be started on a pilot basis.The MoU, valid for three years.

he training program undertaken under this MoU shall be funded as per Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Grameen Kaushalya Yojana (DDU-GKY) cost norms. National Rural Livelihoods Mission (NRLM) and DDU-GKY will communicate to States/UTs for enlisting willing SHG members and rural poor youth about the courses and training by institutes of the Ministry of Ayush. Whereas, the MoA shall provide its institutes for the purpose of conducting courses, training & certification of the aspirants/candidates. The ministry will also depute nodal agencies across the country, who shall ensure mobilization, counselling, training, placement and tracking of candidates as per DDU-GKY norms in their respective designated states.

Apart from this, both ministries will also work on formulating a system, wherein technical assistance would be provided in identifying permissible medicinal plantation activities, plant protection, and inter-cropping in order to generate additional streams for income under relevant schemes of the Ministry of Rural development. Ministry will also arrange training and orientation of plantation beneficiaries and various community-level livelihood workers.

Deen Dayal Upadhyaya-Grameen Kaushalya Yojana (DDU-GKY) is the flagship program of the Ministry of Rural Development, GoI. As a part of the National Rural Livelihood Mission (NRLM), DDU-GKY aims to transform rural poor youth into an economically independent and globally relevant workforce.

India’s KR Parvathy appointed as UN Resident Coordinator in Tajikistan

 

India’s Kavilmadam Ramaswami Parvathy, who has served in leading roles at the World Food Programme in Türkiye and Afghanistan, has been appointed by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres as the United Nations Resident Coordinator in Tajikistan.

Parvathy brings more than 30 years of experience in development and humanitarian sectors, focusing on strategic planning, performance, risk management, people management, conflict analysis and humanitarian access negotiations.

Prior to her appointment as United Nations Resident Coordinator, Parvathy served as Representative and Country Director for the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) in Türkiye.

Parvathy actively contributed to the UN multi-sectoral response in support of the efforts of the government to provide emergency assistance to the earthquake-affected people.

Previously, Parvathy has worked as Representative and Country Director for WFP in Liberia and as Deputy Country Director (Programme and Operations) for WFP in Afghanistan. In other career assignments, Parvathy has served in the Asia Pacific, West Africa, and the regional and global headquarters of WFP, further contributing to ending hunger in the world.

India joined Sea Dragon exercise 2023

 

The third edition of the Sea Dragon exercises is being started in the USA (host) from March 15-30, 2023.

It is a coordinated multilateral anti-submarine warfare (ASW) exercise for long-range maritime reconnaissance aircraft.

In this exercise, Indian Navy participated with its P8I aircraft, which arrived at Guam, USA on 14 March 2023.

Apart from India, US Navy with P8A, Japan with P1, Canada with CP 140, and South Korea with P3C participated.

 

History:

Exercise Sea Dragon is a biennial, multi-national naval exercise focused on Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) training, tactics, and procedures. The exercise has been held since 2015 and is organized by the US Navy. The exercise involves the participation of naval forces from multiple countries in the Indo-Pacific region, including India, Japan, Canada, and the Republic of Korea. The aim of the exercise is to enhance the collective ASW capabilities of the participating navies, while also promoting mutual trust and cooperation between friendly nations. The scope and complexity of the exercise have increased over the years, reflecting the growing importance of ASW in the Indo-Pacific region.

The US has formally recognized the McMahon Line as the international boundary between India’s Arunachal Pradesh and China.

The US has also rejected Beijing’s claim that the northeastern state falls under Chinese territory.

A bipartisan resolution acknowledged Arunachal Pradesh as an integral part of India.

Anup Bagchi to head ICICI Prudential Life from June 2023

 

ICICI Bank’s executive director Anup Bagchi will take over as the CEO of ICICI Prudential Life Insurance on June 19, 2023, subject to regulatory and statutory approvals.

He will replace the present CEO, NS Kannan, who will superannuate on June 18, 2023.

He has been working with the ICICI group since 1992 and was appointed as an executive director of ICICI Bank on February 1, 2017.

He worked as the Non-Executive Director of ICICI Prudential Life since October 2018.

Bengaluru receives ‘healthy city’ award for smoking laws

 

Bengaluru is among five global cities that have been recognised for achievements in preventing noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) and injuries, with the Indian tech city’s efforts in tobacco control winning a USD 150,000 award by a leading global initiative supported by the WHO.

Bengaluru was honoured with the 2023 Partnership for Healthy Cities Award, along with Montevideo in Uruguay; Mexico City, Mexico; Vancouver, Canada and Athens, Greece, at the inaugural Partnership for Healthy Cities Summit held in London.

The Karnataka capital was awarded for its efforts in tobacco control, specifically, reducing smoking in public places and improving compliance with existing mandates on public smoking bans
