Vietnam parliament elects Vo Van Thuong as new President

 

Vietnam’s National Assembly elected Vo Van Thuong as the country’s new President, in a reshuffle of the country’s top leadership amid an anti-graft campaign.

In an extraordinary session, lawmakers confirmed Thuong after the ruling Communist Party nominated him as President.

Thuong’s election follows the sudden resignation of his predecessor Nguyen Xuan Phuc in January, who the Party blamed for wrongdoing.

Thuong is the youngest member of the Party’s Politburo, the country’s top decision-making body.

Jishnu Barua becomes new chairperson of power regulator CERC

 

Jishnu Barua has become the new chairperson of power regulator Central Electricity Regulatory Commission (CERC).

Barua was chief secretary of Assam from October 2020 to August 2022.

Prior to this, he had been additional chief secretary to Assam looking after various departments of the state from August 2017 to October 2020.

Post-retirement, Barua held the charge of chairperson of Assam Power Distribution Company Ltd.

 

Central Electricity Regulatory Commission (CERC):

The CERC has been established by the government of India under the provisions of the Electricity Regulatory Commissions Act, 1998.

CERC is the central commission for the purposes of the Electricity Act, 2003 which has repealed the ERC Act, 1998.

The commission consists of a chairperson and four other members, including Chairperson, Central Electricity Authority, who is the ex-officio member of the commission.

Major functions of CERC under the Act are, inter-alia, to regulate the tariff of generating companies owned or controlled by the central government, to regulate the tariff of other generating companies having a composite scheme for generation and sale of electricity in more than one state, to regulate the inter-state transmission of electricity and to determine tariff for such transmission of electricity, etc.

Under the Act, CERC shall also advise the central government on formulation of national electricity policy and tariff policy; promotion of competition, efficiency and economy in activities of electricity industry; promotion of investment in electricity industry; and any other matter referred to the central commission by the government.

Senior IPS officer Rashmi Shukla to head Sashastra Seema Bal

 

Senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officer, Rashmi Shukla has been appointed as the Director-General of the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB).

SSB is the border-guarding force deployed along Nepal and Bhutan border.

Rashmi Shukla, a 1988 batch IPS officer of the Maharashtra cadre, was posted with the Central Reserve Police (CRPF).

She was heading the State Intelligence Department in Maharashtra Police when the phones of Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut and Nationalist Congress Party leader Eknath Khadse were allegedly tapped in 2019.

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the proposal of the Ministry of Home Affairs for appointment of Rashmi Shukia, IPS (MH:88), presently Additional DG, CRPF, as Director General, Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) {Level-16 of Pay Matrix} from the date of joining the post and up to 30.06.2024 i.e. date of her superannuation or till further orders, whichever is earlier.

India and Australia sign a Framework Mechanism for Mutual Recognition of Qualifications

 

India and Australia signed a framework mechanism for mutual recognition of qualifications that will help in easing the mobility of students and professionals between the two countries.

The agreement was signed following a bilateral meeting between India’s Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and his Australian counterpart Jason Clare in Delhi.

The agreement is part of the commitment by prime ministers of both countries at the 2nd India-Australia Virtual Summit held on March 21, 2022, wherein they had agreed to establish a joint task force for mutual recognition of qualifications.

The Australian government will be contributing 1.89 million dollars for running a skill programme in India in the area of agriculture which is a critical sector for India.

Australia is working on a top priority basis to clear the pendency of education visas for Indian students.

HDFC Bank’s Sashidhar Jagdishan is ‘BS Banker of the Year 2022’

 

Sashidhar Jagdishan, managing director (MD) and chief executive officer (CEO) of HDFC Bank, has been chosen as the Business Standard Banker of the Year 2022.

This award is given to him for his successful navigation of technology-related challenges while maintaining the bank’s strong performance.

Known to his colleagues as Sashi, Jagdishan took charge of HDFC Bank on October 27, 2020, after his illustrious predecessor Aditya Puri demitted office upon attaining the age of 70 years, the maximum age for a CEO in a private sector bank according to the Reserve Bank of India’s norms.

The banking regulator had approved Jagdishan’s appointment for a three-year period, after which he will be eligible for an extension.

He will turn 58 this month. Jagdishan’s journey in HDFC Bank started in 1996 as a manager in the finance function.

A five-member jury, chaired by former Reserve Bank of India deputy governor SS Mundra, has picked Sashidhar Jagdishan as the CEO of the largest private sector bank of the country as the winner.

UN chief names new envoy for Haiti

 

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has appointed Maria Isabel Salvador of Ecuador as his new special representative for Haiti.

Salvador, who will also serve as head of the UN Integrated Office in Haiti, is succeeding Helen La Lime of the United States.

In the private sector, Salvador served for 10 years as the general manager and legal representative for Air France in Ecuador.

She is currently the director of external relations at Universidad de Las Americas (UDLA) in Ecuador, a post she has held since 2015.

Foxconn Chairman inaugurates India’s largest prototyping Centre in Hyd

 

Telangana Government has introduced a new prototyping facility in Hyderabad.

The government launched T-Works in the presence of manufacturing giant Foxconn’s Chairman Young Liu.

While the soft launch of the facility happened about eight months ago, the actual launch happened recently in Hyderabad.

The center which is located beside T-Hub (a research and innovation facility launched by the Government as well) will provide a prototyping platform to several Micro Small and Medium Enterprises, innovators, start-ups, students and other young entrepreneurs. Additionally, it will also help them rent and use equipment.

T-Works will also witness events, competitions and workshops for those who want to undergo training in handling and using equipment.

Foxconn, which is one of Apple’s primary suppliers in India, will also be investing in India, and in the process it will create 1 lakh jobs.

Hockey India Announce Craig Fulton as New Head Coach of the Men’s Hockey Team

 

India named South Africa’s Craig Fulton as the new chief coach of the men’s national hockey team that finished a disappointing ninth in the World Cup at home.

Fulton, who has nearly 25 years of coaching experience, replaces Australian Graham Reid, who quit after India’s dismal show in the World Cup.

Not just Reid, the team’s analytical coach Greg Clark and scientific advisor Mitchell Pemberton had also tendered their resignations.

 

Craig Fulton:

Fulton has shown exemplary results in his previous stints as coach. His rise to fame started with a stint with the Irish men’s team as its head coach between 2014 to 2018 when the team qualified for the Rio Olympics in 2016.

That was the Irish team’s first Olympic qualification in 100 years. The historic feat also won him the FIH Coach of the Year in 2015.

Fulton also worked as assistant coach with the reigning Olympic champions Belgium en route to the gold medal in Tokyo. He was also part of the Belgian coaching staff during their 2018 World Cup win in Bhubaneswar.

Fulton was named Belgium Coach of the Year this year.

In his illustrious career as a hockey player with the South African squad, Fulton played 195 international matches over a span of 10 years. He was part of the South Africa team at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics and 2004 Athens Olympics. He has also played at the World Cup and Commonwealth Games.
