Lieutenant General MV Suchindra Kumar takes over as Vice Chief of Army Staff

 

Lieutenant General MV Suchindra Kumar has assumed the charge of the Vice Chief of the Army Staff.

The General officer has taken over the charge from Lieutenant General BS Raju who has taken over the reins of Jaipur-based Sapta Shakti Command.

Prior to taking over as the Vice Chief of the Army Staff, Lieutenant General Kumar was tenanting the appointment of Deputy Chief of Army Staff (Strategy) at Army Headquarters.

He has experience in intelligence, operations, force structuring, operational logistics and tech infusion in his recent appointments.

Assam govt to host first B2B Global Conference & Expo on Traditional Medicine

 

In a bid to promote traditional medicines at the Global Level, Assam government will host the first B2B Global Conference & Expo on Traditional Medicine under Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) in Guwahati.

More than 150 delegates from 13 member countries will attend the four-day-long Conference and others will participate virtually.

India is presiding over the SCO this year and under the mandate, India is organising SCO’s first international conference and expo on traditional medicine to discuss the possibilities of traditional medicine for enriching the quality of human lives.

India is emerging as a hub of traditional medicines in the world with its growing business that has touched the mark of 22 billion US dollars. The net business value would be around Rupees 4 lakh crore if both manufacturing and services sectors are taken into account, the Minister added.

The Conference and Expo will provide an opportunity for regulators, industries and business leaders in all the SCO and partner countries to deliberate on various aspects of Traditional Medicine aspects.

Govt approves procurement of 70 HTT-40 Basic Trainer Aircraft for Indian Air Force

 

The government has approved the procurement of 70 HTT-40 Basic Trainer Aircraft from Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) for the Indian Air Force at a cost of over six thousand 828 crore rupees. The aircraft will be supplied over a period of six years.

The aircraft will meet the shortage of basic trainer aircraft of IAF for the training of newly inducted pilots.

The HTT-40 is a turboprop aircraft and is designed to have good low-speed handling qualities and provide better training effectiveness.

The procurement is expected to provide direct employment to one thousand 500 personnel and indirect employment for up to three thousand people spread over more than 100 Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises.

The acquisition of the HTT-40 provides a fillip to the Indian Aerospace Defence ecosystem and boosts efforts towards ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’.

India Wins GSMA Government Leadership Award 2023

 

Groupe Speciale Mobile Association (GSMA) has conferred Government Leadership Award 2023 to India for implementing best practices in telecom policy and regulation. GSMA, which represents more than 750 mobile operators and 400 companies in the telecom ecosystem, recognizes one country every year. India was declared winner in the ceremony held at Mobile World Congress Barcelona.

As per GSMA, India’s biggest-ever spectrum auction for 5G was held in July 2022. In total, 72 GHz spectrum was sold across ten spectrum bands. The government lowered reserve prices by 39 per cent across the spectrum band. Seventy-one of all spectrum on auction was sold for $19 billion. All three mobile operators in India acquired spectrum in key 5G bands such as 700 MHz, 3.5 GHz and 26 GHz. To further support 5G rollouts, the government has also liberalised the spectrum cap limit for telecom operators, expanding their ability to hold more spectrum.

SEBI General Manager Ruchi Chojer promoted to Executive Director

 

Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) announced that Chief General Manager Ruchi Chojer has been promoted to Executive Director.

She will handle the Human Resources Department (HRD) which was previously under the charge of A Sunil Kumar.

Chojer will also become the Executive Director of Corporation Finance Investigation Department (CFID), replacing B Rajendran.

Prior to her promotion as Executive Director, Chojer was chief general manager in Sebi and has handled several assignments in markets regulator since joining in 1995.

Earlier, she has served in various departments, including office of investor assistance and education, corporation finance department, investment management department, market intermediaries regulation and supervision department, integrated surveillance department and human resources department.

Adani-Hindenburg case: Supreme Court sets up expert committee for probe

 

The Supreme Court formed a committee headed by its retired judge AM Sapre to probe into the Adani-Hindenburg controversy.

Infosys Co-founder Nandan Nilekani, Infosys ex-Chairman KV Kamath, State Bank of India ex-Chairman OP Bhatt, former Bombay High Court judge Justice JP Devadhar and advocate Somasekhar Sundaresan, are also on it.

 

The Adani-Hindenburg case:

The case pertains to a scathing report released by US short seller Hindenburg Research on January 24, following which shares of 10 listed Adani Group companies suffered significant loss of market value.

At least four petitions have been filed in the Supreme Court in connection with the matter – some questioning the credibility of Hindenburg’s report, while others demanding a probe into the findings of the report, besides the formation of an expert committee.

In addition to appointing an expert committee, the Supreme Court has also asked market regulator Sebi (Securities and Exchange Board of India) to complete its probe in the Adani-Hindenburg case and submit the report within two months.

Ex-Chief Justice of India AM Ahmadi Passes Away

 

Former Chief Justice of India A.M. Ahmadi passed away. He was 91 years old.

Ahmadi was the chief justice from 1994 to 1997.

Having begun his judicial career as a City Civil and Session Court judge in Ahmedabad, he was the only Chief Justice of India who started at the very lowest rank to rise to the highest position of the Indian judiciary.

 

From Sessions Court Judge to CJI:

In 1964, he was appointed as a judge of the City Civil & Sessions Court Ahmedabad and in 1974, he was appointed as secretary to the legal department of the Gujarat government.

In 1976, AM Ahmadi became a judge of the Gujarat High Court.

During his time as a Gujarat High Court judge, Ahmadi also served as a chairman of advisory boards for Conservation of Foreign Exchange and Prevention of Smuggling Activities, Prevention of Black Marketing and Maintenance of Supplies of Essential Commodities.

12 years later, in 1988, Justice Ahmadi was elevated to the Supreme Court of India and eight years after that, in 1994, he became the chief justice of India.

Post his retirement in 1997, Justice Ahmadi went on to serve as a chancellor of the Aligarh Muslim University and is known to have been a strong advocate of minority rights.

Union Ministry of Health & Family Welfare receives Porter Prize 2023

 

In a significant achievement towards recognizing efforts in health sector and especially COVID management, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW), Government of India received the Porter Prize 2023.

The prize was announced at “The India Dialog” organized by Institute for Competitiveness (IFC) and US Asia Technology Management Center (USATMC) at Stanford University.

The theme of the conference was “The Indian Economy 2023: Innovation, Competitiveness and Social Progress”.

The prize recognizes the strategy followed by the Government of India in managing COVID-19, the approach, and involvement of various stakeholders especially involvement of ASHA workers in the industry to create PPE Kits.
